NORTON RESIDENCE

Reclaimed white oak timbers, logs and rustic stone

For DMA, the Norton project was an opportunity to create a total composition of landscape, building and site that melds with and complements the natural surroundings. The design program for the house was to create a unique, comfortable home that would harmonize with an existing guest house constructed of log and reclaimed wood. The style was to be elegant, yet rustic, paying homage to the historic vernacular of Jackson Hole. An observation tower reminiscent of nearby National Park ranger stations was included to allow a sweeping 360 degree view from inside the home. 

Reclaimed white oak timbers and siding were the perfect material to use with the dry stacked rustic stone veneer base. Large view windows balance the heavier materials used and provide spectacular views of distant mountain ranges. Beautiful hand-hewn white oak timbers salvaged from barn demolitions in the Midwest were carried into the house, thereby unifying the home theme and providing a fantastic backdrop for the owner’s furnishings and artwork. Refined cherry cabinetry and expertly smithed wrought iron handrails and balusters add another element of sophistication.

Exterior living spaces were considered as important as interior living spaces. Consequently, we designed a variety of terraces to provide outdoor entertaining space or a peaceful, natural setting to curl up with a book. We were able to work with a flowing natural spring creek that meandered through the property and redirect it into a magnificent reflecting pond and stream. Boulders provide not only a nice, natural looking water’s edge but allow for soothing splashes as the water exits the pond and flows back into the creek channel. Aspen and cottonless cottonwood trees along with a variety of spruce and lodge pole pine contribute to creating a private oasis with manicured lawns and wildflower beds that meld perfectly with the existing pasture.
